Hotels near York train station

Are you visiting York by train and looking for the best hotels near York train station?

Using my local knowledge, I’ve compiled my pick of the best hotels near York rail station to suit all budgets and travellers.

Visiting York by train is easy. The rail station is a short ten minute walk from the city centre so you won’t have far to walk to reach York’s main attractions. You’ll avoid driving in York and trying to find a notoriously difficult (and expensive) parking space.

However, if you travel by train with luggage or kids in tow, you’ll want to stay near the station so you’ll have a short walk to your hotel and avoid a costly taxi or bus transfer.

Luckily, there is a fantastic choice of hotels in York near the train station to suit every budget. My top picks include modern and historic hotels plus dog and family friendly hotels.

The Principal Hotel

📍Station Road, YO24 1AA

Distance from York station – 128 metres

If you’re looking for a hotel near York train station then you won’t get closer than The Principal. This historic and stylish Victorian hotel is one of the largest hotels in York with 155 rooms.

Location | The Principal Hotel is a 10 minute walk from York city centre and just one minute to York city walls and the River Ouse. There are pubs, cafes and restaurants within a 5 minute walk. If you need groceries, there is a small supermarket inside York train station.

Facilities | This is one of the few York hotels with a pool. It also features a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and a gym. There are two dining options (the Refectory Restaurant and the Garden Room) plus a bar.

The communal areas of the hotel are luxurious with an elegant decor. A full Yorkshire breakfast can be included in the room rate.

The Grand, York

The Grand Hotel York

📍Station Rise, YO1 6GD

Distance from York station – 320 metres

The Grand Hotel is York’s only 5 star hotel. It dates back to 1906 and sits just inside York city walls. This hotel oozes luxury and sophistication and is highly rated for its customer service.

Location | The hotel is a 5 minute walk from York rail station and from York city centre. There are pubs, restaurants and cafes within a 2 minute walk.

Facilities | The Grand York has a basement spa featuring a 13-metre pool, a Nordic dry sauna, aromatic steam room, beauty treatments and a gym.

The hotel also boasts it own cookery school which offers half day and full day cooking lessons.

There are two dining options; The Rise Restaurant serves British cuisine and afternoon tea whilst the award winning Legacy Restaurant serves a tasting menu. I think Legacy is one of the best romantic restaurants in York. Breakfast can be included in the room rate.

Rooms | The high quality rooms ensure comfort and privacy. Each room has extra large double beds or single beds, a tv, fridge, kettle, seating area and a safe.

I love the extras such as the Egyptian cotton sheets and the Molten Brown toiletries. There is a bath and shower in the ensuite.

If you’re visiting York with kids, the Grand provides children with a goody bag, a soft toy and their own robe and slippers. Family rooms sleep four and interconnecting rooms are also available.

If you are looking for a York hotel near the train station that offers something a little different, then The Bar Convent is for you. It’s the oldest working convent in the U.K and offers 3 star accommodation in a Grade I listed building.

Location | The convent guesthouse is opposite Micklegate Bar, one of the medieval gateways into the City of York. It’s a 5 – 10 minute walk to York city centre and 1 minute to the city walls, pubs, cafes and restaurants.

Facilities | In addition to its hotel rooms, the convent has an excellent cafe, an enclosed garden, an exhibition centre and a chapel. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate but you can upgrade to a full English for an additional charge.

There is also a fully equipped guest kitchen if you wish to self-cater in the evenings.

Hampton by Hilton

📍Toft Green, YO1 6JT

Distance from York train station – 650 metres

This modern hotel is tucked on a quiet side street just inside the city walls. There are two Hampton by Hiltons in York but the other branch in Piccadilly is much further away from the rail station so make sure you book the correct hotel.

Location | The hotel is a 1 minute walk from Micklegate where you will find cafes, pubs and restaurants. It’s a 10 minute walk to York Minster.

Facilities | There is a 24 hour front desk, a restaurant, a gym and a communal lounge near the reception area. A hot buffet breakfast is included in the room rate.

Rooms | Compact ensuite rooms sleep up to 3 people in a double, twin or sofa bed. Each room has a desk, tv, free WiFi and a kettle. There is a shower in the ensuite.

The rooms are small and lack a little character but with breakfast included, they are good value for money in a central location.

Judge’s Lodging

📍9 Lendal, YO1 8AQ

Distance from rail station – 650 metres

The Judge’s Lodging is a great option if you want to stay in the heart of the busy city centre inside the city walls. It’s a Grade I listed Georgian townhouse packed with character and style.

Location | The hotel has an enviable location just a few metres from Museum Gardens. York Minster is 5 minutes on foot. You’ll be surrounded by cafes, bars and restaurants so you may experience some night time noise.

Facilities | There is a restaurant, two bars (including a basement pub popular with locals) and free WiFi. A full English breakfast can be included in the room rate.

Rooms | Compact country style rooms sleep two people in a double or twin beds. Each room has a tv, fridge and kettle. The ensuite has a bathtub with an over shower.

The rooms are small but the location is hard to beat. Note that the Terrace Rooms face the Cellar Bar so unless you’re a night owl, I’d choose one of the other rooms options.

Feature Rooms and Suites are much bigger and the top floor Judge’s Suite has a stunning view of York Minster.

Impossible Motel

📍5 St.Helen’s Square, YO1 8QN

Distance from York train station – 800 metres

This adults-only hotel is in the centre of York in a Grade II listed building. It offers a range of room styles and is perfect for a romantic getaway in York. The 13 rooms are spread over three floors but unfortunately there’s no lift so it’s not suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

Location | The hotel is opposite Betty’s Tea Rooms and is less than 5 minutes on foot from York Minster. You’ll be surrounded by cafes, pubs and restaurants.

Facilities | The hotel is above the Impossible Restaurant and Bar so you’re likely to hear some night time noise.

Rooms | There are lots of different styles to choose from. The cheapest rooms are the intimate, windowless basement rooms which have a King bed, an in-room shower and a kettle.

There are several first floor rooms packed with character and antique furniture that sleep 2 in a four poster bed. These rooms have tiny bathrooms but they offer views of York city centre. The Deluxe King room has a rolltop bath on its own platform. I think these mid-range rooms are good value for money for the location and quality of the finishes.

For the ultimate indulgence, book one of the top floor suites. These rooms have four poster beds, a large bathroom plus a private rooftop terrace with a hot tub (a rare feature in York city centre hotels).

The nearest Premier Inn to the train station is on busy Blossom Street, a 5 minute walk from the station. There is a restaurant, a bar and it has double, single and family rooms available. Blossom Street is busy so you may hear traffic and party noise at night.

The nearest Travelodge near York train station is York Central on Micklegate, 800 metres from York station.  It has a restaurant, double, single and family rooms and is on a busy road between two popular York nightclubs. As a result, you should expect night time noise.
