The Judge’s Lodging York is a Grade I listed Georgian townhouse packed with character and style. This is a good option if you’re visiting York by train or want a historic hotel for your York Christmas market break.
Location | The hotel is a few metres from Museum Gardens and 5 minutes on foot from York Minster. York rail station is only 0.6 miles / 965 metres away.
Facilities | There’s a restaurant, two bars (including a basement pub popular with locals) and free Wi-Fi. A full English breakfast can be included in the room rate. There isn’t parking on site so you’ll need to park in Marygate car park, a 10 minute walk through Museum Gardens.
Rooms | Compact country-style rooms sleep two people in a double or twin beds. Each room has a tv, fridge and a kettle. The ensuite has a bathtub with an over-shower. Feature rooms and suites are much larger and the top floor Judge’s Suite has a stunning view of York Minster.
Note that the Terrace Rooms face the Cellar Bar so unless you’re a night owl, I’d choose one of the other rooms options.

I think this cosy hotel is one of the best boutique hotels for a York Christmas break. Its hidden, private courtyard is set back from the street so you’ll enjoy a quiet, city centre stay. It offers contemporary luxury in a Grade II listed Georgian building which was once home to the judges of York.
Location | It’s a 15 minute walk from York train station and 8 minutes from York Minster. There are shops, pubs, a small supermarket and restaurants nearby.
Facilities | The hotel has a 24 hour front desk and free Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, there isn’t parking on site so you’ll need to park nearby in Castle car park or Marygate car park.
Rooms | Each of the 15 rooms are unique and beautifully decorated. You can book rooms with double or a four-poster beds, in-room freestanding bathtubs or large walk-in rainfall showers.
Each room has a tv, kettle, sofa and a quirky feature wall. This is a lovely hotel and if you’re travelling as a couple, I think it’s one of the best romantic hotels in York.

This newly opened hotel is set in a Grade II listed building in the heart of York city centre. It’s a quirky, luxurious adults-only hotel best suited to night owl couples looking to be close to York’s bars and pubs.
Location | It’s a 15 minute walk from York train station and 6 minutes from York Minster.
Facilities | There’s a sister bar and restaurant next door to the motel and a live music bar on the first floor. Note that the rooms are spread over three floors but due to the age of the building there isn’t a lift. Parking isn’t available on site so you’ll need to park in Marygate car park (a 10 minute walk). All rooms have free Wi-Fi.
Rooms | There’s 13 individually decorated rooms. Themed, window-less basement rooms have a King size bed, open showers, a Smart TV, kettle and a/c. First and second floor rooms have Super King size four-poster beds, in-room bathtubs and luxury linens and fittings. The Sir Joseph Terry suite boasts its own rooftop terrace and hot tub.

This new, contemporary hotel has an enviable city centre location and is suitable for solos, couples and groups. For location, size and style, it’s one of the best value for money hotels near to York Christmas market.
Location | It’s a 24 minute walk from the train station or you can catch a bus from the station which drops you opposite the hotel. York Minster is 12 minutes on foot. You’re also a couple of minutes walk from the cafes and restaurants on Fossgate.
Facilities | There’s a restaurant, a bar, a gym and free Wi-Fi. Breakfast is included in the room rate. We’ve eaten the buffet breakfast here several times; there’s lots of choice plus the dining room has a great view of Clifford’s Tower.
There isn’t parking on site but self-parking is available within a 5 minute walk at £22 per day.
Rooms | Classic style rooms sleep up to 3 people in twin, Queen and King size beds and sofa beds. Interconnecting rooms are available for families and groups.
Each room has a/c, a safe, tv, kettle and a fridge. The ensuite has a walk-in shower. Each room is a good size and wall decor adds a homely touch.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly hotel near York Christmas market, I recommend The Fort York. If you’re travelling with a group of friends, this boutique hotel offers self-catering apartments as well as rooms.
Location | It’s a 2 minute walk from York Minster and a 16 minute walk from York rail station. There are pubs, restaurants and cafes on your doorstep and a small supermarket is a 5 minutes on foot.
Facilities | There’s free Wi-Fi and Kennedy’s Bar is adjacent to the hotel if you want to grab a drink or food. The Fort doesn’t have parking so you’ll need to park in Marygate or Monk Bar car park (approximately a 10 minute walk from the hotel).
Rooms | There are 6 double rooms and 3 self-catering apartments.
Double rooms sleep 2 people in a double bed and have a sofa, tv, table and chair plus an ensuite with a shower. Each room has a unique, contemporary decor.

If you’re visiting York with kids, this hotel has rooms sleeping up to 5 people (a rarity in York!).
Location | York rail station is 10 minutes on foot.
Facilities | There’s a bar and a restaurant specialising in British and Yorkshire dishes. I highly recommend the afternoon tea here; I think it’s one of the best afternoon teas in York.
Unfortunately, there isn’t parking on-site but fee paying parking is available nearby at Marygate or Monk Bar car park.

Location | It’s a 25 minute walk from York rail station or you can catch a bus from the station to Piccadilly, a 4 minute walk from the hotel. York Minster is 16 minutes on foot.
Facilities | There’s a small gym, a bar selling locally produced wine, beer and gin and a restaurant. Breakfast and free Wi-Fi is included in the room rate. In-room dining is possible between 5 pm and 9 pm.
Rooms | There’s 103 rooms spread over 4 floors (with a lift!). All rooms have a tv, workspace, mini fridge, a complimentary minibar, a kettle and a/c. Thoughtfully decorated rooms sleep 2 people in a double or twin beds. The stylish tiled ensuite features a walk-in shower.
I love the feature walls with prints portraying the history of York – it’s a small detail but it adds a homely, colourful touch.

Facilities | Grays Court York has a bar and an award-winning Bow Room Restaurant which serves fine dining cuisine. There’s lots of historical features such as a stone flagged entrance hall, a Georgian dining room, leaded windows and a 90-foot Jacobean-era wooden gallery.
On-site parking costs £20 per day and breakfast is included in the room rate.
